Sewing Edges II: Attaching Bias Tape

When I first started working with bias tape, I didn't know much about it. In fact, I just folded the bias tape around my raw edge and sewed. While this method worked okay, I have since learned there is actually a technique to properly install bias tape that results in a more professional looking edge.

Attaching Bias Tape

Click the images below to enlarge them.
1. When you fold the bias tape in half lengthwise you will notice a wide edge and a narrow edge. In the picture the wide edge is on the bottom.

2. Pin the narrow edge of the bias tape to the edge of the fabric, right sides together.
3. Stitch in the fold of the bias tape.

4. Here is what it looks like.
5. Fold the bias tape to the right, over the stitching.6. This is what it should look like.

7. Continue folding all the way around to the wrong side of the fabric.8. With the right side of the fabric facing up (and the raw edge sandwiched between the bias tape folds), stitch as close to the edge of the bias tape as you can. Some people prefer to stitch in the ditch (right where the fabric and bias tape meet) at this point. Either method will catch the wide edge of the bias tape on the wrong side of the fabric.

Here is what your bias tape will look like on the front and the back of your project! A fast and pretty way to finish a raw edge! Click here for tips on how to sew bias tape around a corner. Check out my previous post on how to make the bias tape!
